CHINA-UK: BRITISH HOUSE OF COMMONS VOTED FOR MOTION TO ENHANCE SECURITY COOPERATION WITH TAIWAN AND ITS BID FOR INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION
Members of the British House of Commons on February 10 unanimously voted for a motion
to enhance security cooperation with Taiwan and support its bid for international recognition
following discussions over UK-Taiwan friendship and cooperation presided over by MPs
Alicia Kearns and Bob Steward — who are cochairs of the China Research Group and BritishTaiwanese All-Party Parliamentary Group respectively. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs
thanked British lawmakers on February 11 for passing a motion to enhance security
cooperation with Taiwan and support its bid for international recognition. Committee
Chairman Tom Tugendhat said (February 11) that “I am very much looking forward to the
opportunity to visit Taiwan and show that the UK will stand up for the protection of the island’s
democratic values under increased pressure from Beijing.” A 9-member delegation of the
British Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee is to visit Taiwan on February 19 to offer their
support in dealing with Chinese pressure.
