In an article captioned 'Associating Taiwan with Ukraine is a trap ‘in the Global Times
(Chinese edition) on February 15, Cui Hongjian, Director of the European Institute of the China
Institute of International Studies, described "The Ukraine crisis, in which the United States,
Russia and Europe are deeply involved, has become the biggest geopolitical hotspot at the
moment." He added "At the same time, it has also become a “right and wrong place” that some
people have too much imagination. One of them is to compare the Ukraine crisis with the
Taiwan issue. . American public opinion and the Taiwan Democratic Progressive Party
authorities are the strongest advocates of this argument. And when they compare Ukraine with
Taiwan, they hide the preconditions and actually set up a discourse trap." He claimed, "The
United States, which is simultaneously engaged in a strategic game with China and Russia, is
well aware of this and has to link Ukraine and Taiwan for political and diplomatic purposes,
and separate the two for practical strategic considerations" and advised "As a responsible major
country, China should not only firmly defend its national interests, but also actively maintain
strategic balance and play a constructive role in international security." In conclusion he said
"On the Taiwan issue, of course, we cannot be shackled by the so-called "defense of
democracy" in American public opinion, nor can we be distracted by the noise of "Taiwan
independence" forces. The great cause of national reunification is progressing in a steady and
orderly manner." He added "We naturally have the patience to let the people on Taiwan pay
more attention to the trend of the Ukraine issue, so that they can see how the United States is
struggling to support the two games between Europe and Asia, so that they can figure out the
real hope of their own future and destiny. The world situation is changing. If you choose to be
a pawn of another country, you will always put your own destiny in the hands of others. And
Taiwan has been a part of China since ancient times. Of course, the fate of Taiwan must be
determined and created by the Chinese."
