CHINA-EU/UKRAINE: CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER WANG YI ASKS EU TO DROP SANCTIONS AGAINST RUSSIA IF IT WANTS CHINA TO MEDIATE

The EU High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell Fontelles had a tele conversation with Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on March 7 regarding the situation in Ukraine. They agreed to continue discussions after two days. One report states, however, that in private conversation some EU officials disclosed that Wang Yi during his conversation with Borrell was clear that the EU needs to drop sanctions if it wants China to intermediate. El Mundo earlier on March 4 quoted Borrell as saying that China was the only possible mediator in the war. “We have not asked for it, nor have they asked for it, but since it has to be a power and neither the US nor Europe can be, China could be”.
