CHINA-HUMAN RIGHTS: VISIT OF UNHRC TO CHINA CRITICISED BY WORLD UYGHUR CONGRESS AS A 'WASTED TRIP'

The visit (May 23-28) by Michelle Bachelet, Commissioner of the UNHRC to China, including Kashgar and Urumqi, made no headway in addressing human rights issues in China. The World Uyghur Congress said the UN Rights Chief has wasted a historic opportunity to assess Uyghur genocide. In a strongly worded statement WUC President, Dolkun Isa, stated “As expected, the High Commissioner has wasted a historic opportunity to investigate the Uyghur genocide and deliver justice to the Uyghur people. The High Commissioner has ruined her office’s credibility by aligning with China’s wishes and conducting a visit that by no means adequately addressed justice for Uyghurs and accountability for those responsible”. Radio France International (May ) reported that according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry website the Chinese government made its goals clear before Bachelet entered Xinjiang. At a one-on-one meeting with Michelle Bachelet on May 23, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed hope that this visit would help clarify the “misinformation” about China. He also gave Bachelet a copy of Xi Jinping’s book. According to China’s state media, it was an English translation of “Excerpts from Xi Jinping’s Discourses on Respecting and Safeguarding Human Rights".
