CHINA ECONOMY: HOUSING

Writing in the English-language official newspaper 'China Daily' (March 29) Ma Guangyuan, member of the 12th Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and Director of the Private Economy Research Center under the Renmin University of China, cautioned that housing prices were rising slower and the number of homes sold in Beijing in February were the lowest since 2007. He said "the drastic fall of the yuan's exchange rate against the dollar in February has also caused widespread concerns over the negative impacts caused by the possible exodus of international capital from the Chinese housing market" and warned that "a chilly Autumn is coming for China's housing market". He concluded that "the only option ahead for the Chinese government is that it should change the current real estate regulatory policy"
