CHINA-PLA's ANTI-CORRUPTION CAMPAIGN

Communist history writer Cai Xiaoxin, son of revolutionary Communist major-general Cai Zhangyuan and a 'princeling', said in an exclusive interview with Sichuan-based Honesty Outlook magazine, that some performers in PLA Dance troupes have taken advantage of their status as PLA "celebrities" for personal gains. He said "We cannot avoid the fact that some military cadres lacking in self-discipline have indeed treated the performance troupes as their own person 'harems'." Cai Xiaoxin also praised Chinese President Xi Jinping's ongoing anti-corruption campaign in the PLA and said the campaign has revealed that corruption not only still exists inside the military, it remains at a level where something had to be done. He emphasised that at the leadership level the PLA must continue to follow the paramount authority of the party. The PLA's disciplinary committee should also be directly under the jurisdiction of the Central Military Commission. He praised the government's efforts in weeding out graft, but also recognized the public's concerns that corruption will return as soon as the current campaign ends. He added that while Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign had made remarkable progress, it is still just at the "front gate" and it is clear that campaign must crush the bureaucracy and crony capitalism built up over the last 20-30 years. On the subject of his fellow "hongerdai" — literally the "red second generation" — Cai Xiaoxin said the vast majority of them are not corrupt and do not take advantage of their powerful parents. Ninety-five percent of hongerdai are "normal" people, he said, adding that many of them these days don't have either money or power.
